Upgrading H100 to push/pull

Postby nilkilla » Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:20 pm

Whew...its been a rough month. Moving aside, I also replaced my motherboard. It appears that my eVGA X58 FTW motherboard has enough clearance to fit a push/pull.

I'm currently running Sythe Slipstream 120mm fans for my H100, and I'm considering just buying another pair for my upgrade. Would this make sense to just buy another pair or should i look into a different set of 4?

Those fans seem good, the only issue i see is that the fans may not have enough power to keep things cool. but if they work now they are cheap enough to take a chance on a quad config.

I had a few of those slipstreams. They moved a whole lot of air but also came with a whole lot of noise. I ended up trying out these Cougar fans and they have been pretty awesome. They can move just as much air but at a much lower decible level. They are a bit more expensive too, but you get what you pay for. I'm in a garage in Texas and it doesn't really get cooler than 80 degrees F for an ambient temp and my CPU idles at 39-41c/102-105F. I only have two fans pulling through the rad and it seems to work pretty well. Just my two cents.

I was going to suggest the Noctua F12 fans but they are considerably more when it comes to price and since they don't push the same amount of air the performance may be worse. The recent water 2.0 review provided that fans can make or break a self contained watercooler and sometimes you just need to test several before you find ones that really work.

Based on Static pressure, I'm starting over my research altogether. I'm even considering the Corsair SP120s, but having an exchangeable colored ring isn't the biggest deal to me, especially in the placement of the fans being at the top of the case on the inside doesn't even show up in most visuals.

Anyways, does anyone here have any suggestions in regards to Static Pressure over airflow?

Those cougars do look nice btw...

more pressure is only important for thicker rads. thin one likes on the H100 won't need much pressure so you can go with more airflow. Most of the time the two specs scale the same so be sure to consider noise as a median spec.
