Noob looking for new desktop

Postby bob vila » Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:56 am

Hey I'm new here, but my friend said this site helped him a lot and I should check here, so I hope I'm in the right place.

I'm looking for a Windows Desktop for around $500. I'll be using it for school, Minecraft, 4chan, Facebook, and stuff like that, nothing too special I just don't want it to be slow.

I know absolutely nothing about computers, and I don't have the time to research and build my own. I've looked around the internet and all the choices are overwhelming. So I think I've narrowed the choices down to something good.

This one would be around $500 after adding the OS, internal internet card, and case I like.

And this one would come as is for just over $500.

I'm not sure if either of these are good for their price, so any opinions and suggestions are more than welcome. Or if you have a link to a better offer that'd be awesome too.

Thanks in advance.

hey there, welcome to the forum.

The biggest issue with cut rate sub 500 dollar machines is that once you take away the 100 dollars set aside for the operating system you are left with 400 dollars of the cheapest components someone can buy. Oh and don't forget the 20% markup set aside for profit and labor.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for and if you decide to buy from a shop that has no rep then there is likely no way to get "real" support after the sale. And lets face it, if you are looking to buy a complete system for 500 bones there is a good chance that you won't know how to fix it if something does go wrong.

With that being said I spent 5min and found this killer of a deal, on dell.com.

Cheaper AND an option to go faster PLUS true Indian support lines for super confusion and scripted results.

Neither your or this option come with a keyboard mouse monitor combo so there is the basic assumption you have those already, If not then spend the 400 dollars more and get a good laptop.

Going cheap you get cheap. You might as well go to Walmart and pick up your pc. http://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Black-Pavi ... m/19714395 Ship to home for 98 cents more unless that is too much.

One more thing Bob Villa if you can figure out how many shingles to put on a house you can figure out how to make your own PC. All it takes is reading skill. Find out what the popular motherboards are out there find a CPU that will fit that motherboard, Memory, Hard drive, case, Power Supply, Video Card you want. And what will fit in your budget. I bought my first 2 pc's and once paid Gateway a heck of alot of money.

I say NO MORE. I wont give any of them a dime. What you get is the cheapest, most stripped down PC you can get if you buy it from anyone that makes PC's unless you pay a botique gamer PC manufacturer. Those guys dont cut corners or they wouldnt be in business. Like IBUYPOWER. You can buy an AMD system there for $529. That is the best bet you can get for your dollar unless you buy components and make your own which I recommend over buying one from someone else. Most all of us have been down the buy a premade PC road and would rather pull our teeth out then go through it again EVER.

You can just dodge having to buy an OS and run the Win 8 beta for now then a $500 build is pretty possible.

Edit:Also that wally world PC has godawful specs. For 500 I could build a decent rig with at least 4 threads and a half decent Vid card it would be enough to have a good game experience at med low setting for most games.

I've seen a few magazines on news stands that say "How to Build a PC." Even has prices. I can't find mine. Think someone stole it.

I tried to read one once, but who can really be bothered to use anti-static bracelets and anti-static bags? I just store my loose hardware under my socks..no problems.
