What Went Wrong with NV3x @ Anandtech

So what did go wrong, everyone thought the NV3x was going to be the best thing since processed cheese.
"Yes, NV3x is a different architecture, but just how different is it from its bigger brother? What are the reasons we didn't see the performance we would have liked from NV3x? How exactly did NV40 manage to improve on NV3x's architecture to allow the 6800 to stretch its legs so far?"
This is one of them technical articles that compares the GPU chips on paper side by side, however I think this sentence really sums everything up in a nutshell.
