ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme @ TechPowerUp

Published: | Posted By:

TechPowerUp described this flagship E-ATX motherboard as packed with premium components and cutting-edge connectivity at a steep $999 price tag. It offers support for Ryzen 7000 through Ryzen 9000 CPUs on AM5, features a 20+2+2 phase VRM setup with robust heatsinks and an optional 40 mm fan, and handles DDR5 memory beyond 9000 MT/s. Expansion is generous, with two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, four PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, and additional PCIe 4.0 and SATA ports. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, dual Ethernet (10 Gb and 5 Gb), USB4 Type-C ports, and a full suite of USB 10 Gbps and Type-A ports. The board also features a striking 5-inch LCD display, reinforced VRM backplate, tool-free M.2 heatsinks, Q-Releases for slots, and enhanced overclocking controls.

"A halo tier flagship motherboard should be drooled-over by many and owned by few. There's no doubt that this is one of the most extreme X870E options on the market, featuring unique approaches to expansion and support for sub-ambient overclocking. But does it do enough justify the price tag?"

Under hands-on testing the board delivered stable performance and excellent overclocking flexibility in the EFI BIOS, which TechPowerUp called among the strongest on any consumer board. The VRM thermal solution kept temperatures around 53 °C, even under load, with options to tune the VRM fan for quieter operation. SSD temperatures stayed well in check on the top M.2 slots, though users reported that the lower M.2 heatsink may require removal of the GPU and offers less convenience. The review concluded that this board delivers nearly every premium feature available on AM5, making it ideal for extreme overclocking and future-proof builds, but noted that most users could achieve similar everyday performance for significantly less using a less expensive model.
