  • Borderlands 4 Performance Benchmark @ TechPowerUp

Published: Sunday, September 14, 2025 | By: Eddie

TechPowerUp reviewed Borderlands 4, highlighting how it evolves the series with its first truly open-world design on the planet Kairos. The game offers varied regions, side quests, and new traversal tools like grappling hooks, gliders, double jumps, dashes, and swimming, which make exploration more fluid and combat feel tighter and more responsive. It keeps the series’ trademark humor and over-the-top loot system while introducing a fresh cast of Vault Hunters. While the main storyline remains mostly linear, side quests stand out for their engaging writing and dark humor. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, delivering the best visuals in the series to date, with richer geometry, lighting, and textures while retaining the signature cel-shaded style. However, cutscenes are capped at 30 FPS, which makes them feel stuttery, and some texture pop-in still occurs.

Borderlands 4 brings major improvements to gameplay, gunplay, character progression, and finally delivers a true open-world experience. Hardware requirements are steep, though. In our performance review, we examine its graphical fidelity, VRAM usage, and how well it runs on a variety of modern GPUs.

Performance-wise, the game is very demanding. Achieving 60 FPS at 1080p on max settings requires a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti or better, with 1440p needing a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, and even those GPUs struggle at 4K. Upscaling is well implemented, with support for NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS, alongside frame generation, though each GPU brand is locked to its own frame-gen tech. VRAM usage is high, hitting about 14 GB at 4K max settings, which puts 8 GB cards at a disadvantage. Still, using upscaling, frame generation, and lowering from “Badass” to “High” or “Medium” settings can greatly improve performance while preserving visual quality. Despite its heavy hardware requirements and $70 price tag, the game delivers a highly addictive looter-shooter experience, with responsive controls, impressive visuals, and over 40 hours of content for those who dial in the right settings.

  • ASUS ROG Ally X Review @ TechPowerUp

Published: Sunday, September 7, 2025 | By: Eddie

TechPowerUp reviewed the ASUS ROG Ally X as a meaningful upgrade over the original Ally, with design improvements, better internals, and longer battery life. It features AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor paired with 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a faster 1 TB SSD, giving it solid performance for AAA and indie titles alike. The 7-inch 1080p 120 Hz display delivers smooth visuals, while the larger 80 Wh battery nearly doubles runtime compared to the first model. Ergonomic refinements, such as rounded grips and improved button placement, make the device more comfortable for extended gaming sessions.

The ASUS ROG Ally X has been around for a year now. While we are late to the party, we decided to put it through our testing suite and see whether it's still the best Windows PC handheld around.

The review also noted some drawbacks. While performance is strong, Windows 11 continues to pose usability challenges in a handheld form factor, with occasional app quirks and a less intuitive interface compared to Linux-based systems like SteamOS. Fan noise can also become noticeable under load, and the Ally X is priced higher than its predecessor, which may limit its appeal for some buyers. Still, with its blend of power, portability, and upgraded design, the ROG Ally X stands out as one of the most capable handheld gaming PCs currently available.

  • Patriot Viper Elite 5 RGB DDR5-7000 32 GB CL38 Review @ TechPowerUp

Published: Saturday, September 6, 2025 | By: Eddie

TechPowerUp evaluated the Patriot Viper Elite 5 DDR5-7000 as a strong contender in the budget-oriented segment of high-speed DDR5. Offering speeds up to 7000 MT/s, the kit is well-suited for Intel platforms, especially 13th and 14th Generation CPUs, where 7200 MT/s often represents a sweet spot. It includes fallback XMP profiles at 6800 and 6600 MT/s for broader compatibility, though Intel 12th Generation systems may still require extra tweaking. On the AMD side, performance is more limited due to memory controller ratios beyond 6000 MT/s, making this kit less ideal for Ryzen systems. While it lacks EXPO profiles and isn’t designed for heavy overclocking, the kit provides stability, broad usability, and attractive RGB lighting at a competitive price point.

Patriot has expanded the Viper lineup with a new series under the Elite brand. Aimed at budget-conscious builders, this 32 GB DDR5-7000 kit is designed for Intel users and includes three XMP profiles to maximize compatibility. Join us as we test this memory and see how it compares to the competition!

The review also noted the trade-offs that come with affordability. Looser timings and higher voltage requirements mean it doesn’t achieve top-tier benchmark results, and overclocking potential is modest compared to Patriot’s higher-end Venom or Xtreme series. That said, the impact on real-world gaming is minimal, especially for players who focus on visuals rather than esports-level frame rates. For budget-conscious builders, the money saved with this kit could be better invested in a stronger GPU or CPU, ultimately improving overall system performance. TechPowerUp concluded that the Viper Elite 5 RGB DDR5-7000 delivers a solid balance of speed, aesthetics, and affordability, making it a worthwhile choice for gamers and mainstream users looking to upgrade without overspending.
