  • ECS KN1 Extreme @ HEXUS

Published: Wednesday, January 12, 2005 | By: Dennis

There are a few motherboard companies out there that make their money by building low-rent motherboards and selling a ton of them to OEMs and other "hole in the wall" style computer shops. These boards typically feature a copy of the reference BIOS and hardly any onboard features but become very stable as a result.
"So, if you want to taste the goodness of NVIDIA's latest chipset in its Ultra incarnation and aren't worried about the overclocking side of things, what you have here is a solid, stable, fully featured setup, and all at an extremely tempting price point to boot. The overclockers among us will want to wait however, either for future BIOS updates for this board or to look elsewhere."
Keep your eyes open the next time you go down to that "ma & pa" computer shop and start checking the brand names on their used equipment.

    Scary huh?

  • Gigabyte GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E @ hi-techreviews

Published: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 | By: Dennis

"The Gigabyte 6600GT PCI-E video card is the perfect solution for anyone looking for a mid-priced graphics card that is fully capable of playing all of the current games on the market today. The picture quality is amazing and even in 2D the text is easy to read and you will have no problem working on documents when you take a break from your next round of Half Life or UT 2004."
Couldn't you say that with just about any 6600GT?? happy smile

  • iMac Conversion @ Creative Mods

Published: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 | By: Dennis

Here is a mod that would make most Mac users think the world was coming to an end. tongue smile
"The iMac is impressive. Released as an all-in-one computer from Apple, it crams every needed element of a computer all into one small case. Aside from the huge 15 inch CRT monitor, it had room for a slot-loading CD-ROM, hard-drive, processor, ram, and even speakers."
The mod actually turned out pretty good though seemed like they just stacked everything up on the inside.

  • Unlocking and Overclocking the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 @ OCIA

Published: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 | By: Dennis

Here is a pretty good how-to on the moddability of the vanilla 6800.
"This seemed completely reasonable, as the 6800 is more or less a watered-down version of its GT counterpart. My mind began to roam, wondering if it would be possible to unlock / overclock this base model XFX 6800 to the GT level, a card that cost nearly $130 more. And so my quest began..."

The Bling factor just got multiplied by 10!
"You better believe it! Corsair pulls out all the stops and has already launched their first product for 2005! We take a look at the modules and see what all makes these Xpert modules different from the Pro series. ..."
I wonder if you can get the LEDs to flash words of wisdom like "Excuse me, but I believe you have my stapler" tongue smile

  • Soltek EQ3901-300P SFF @ ViperLair

Published: Friday, January 7, 2005 | By: Dennis

I still think these things look like an old radio. tongue smile
"Soltek have been building SFFs for quite some time and had good success with their QBic line of barebone PCs. Recently they've redesigned their line and included a new series dubbed the Mania. Sporting the latest chipsets, if you're grown tired of the same old "cube" SFFs we're used to seeing, the new Soltek EQ3901-300P may be to your liking."

  • MatrixRAID Examined @ OCAU

Published: Friday, January 7, 2005 | By: Dennis

"HOW DOES MATRIX RAID WORK AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
With the ICH6-R (the R denotes RAID capability) it is now possible to run RAID 0 and RAID 1 with only two physical hard disks. It’s up to the individual user how to take advantage of these arrays."

RAID is good for a number of reasons, Increased data storage, Increased data protection (from hardware failure, not integrity), and Increased speed. The only drawback is that you can only pick 2.

  • ABIT AA8 DuraMAX i925X Review @ HardwareZone

Published: Friday, January 7, 2005 | By: Dennis

"While considered old school, ABIT remains as one of the top motherboard manufacturers and is still a household name for enthusiast oriented motherboards. Their recent endorsement of Fatal1ty, the world's top gamer is a testament that ABIT intends to stay in the race. "
So far we have only reviewed one Abit board here at Ninjalane and while I wished that wasn't the case the lack of support from Abit really squashed our ongoing support of their stuffs.

This may change in the coming future so stay tuned. wink smile

  • Evercool Mini Watercooler WC-301 @ PC Review

Published: Friday, January 7, 2005 | By: Dennis

Here is another all-in-one watercooling unit from Evercool.
"The unit fitted neatly into place and was secured with the supplied fixing bolts through the four case holes that formerly held the 80mm fan. It has a variety of fixing holes to allow for most case configurations.

There are two fan settings, selected with a front-mounted switch, and the Evercool logo on the front of the main unit glows a different colour for each fan setting and a third colour coupled with an audible warning should the water level fall too low. "

Evercool has quite a history here at Ninjalane. The very first project published here used Evercool fans and was actually quite a success.

Though somewhat dated by todays casemodding standards.
