Doom 3 System Requrements
Published: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 | By: DennisFor all of you waiting to get your hands on the latest id game you should check to see that you have everything you would need.
"There's that glassy stare, the twitchy hands, jumpiness, maybe even a little drooling and certainly some muttering. It's what happens when id Software says "It's done!" with its latest first-person-shooter title."
-- snip --
"Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:
• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.
If your existing rig doesn't meet these specs, here's a guide to beefing it up to play Doom 3 in all its gory glory."
Looks like that 6800 Ultra isn't "needed" but what kind of gamer would be if you didn't have one. -
NL: Review Block - Case Reviews
Published: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 | By: DennisThe one thing about cases these days is that it's becoming increasingly more difficult to find a good case suitable for modding. Often times you find cases that are attempting to be something they are it with huge plastic extrusions or cases that are covered with windows and cheap custom paint. These cases never have thick enough metal to mod with and just feel flimsily.
I say bring back the cases of old, we need good metal, unique but conservative styles, and removable parts like motherboard trays and front panels.

- Aerocool JetMaster Jr @ 3DXtreme
- Thermaltake Tsunami Dream @ Barrys Rigs
I will admit the CoolerMaster Stacker is pretty dang cool but hella huge.

CoolJag JVC682A K8 Heatsink Review Posted
Published: Monday, July 19, 2004 | By: DennisI have been a huge fan of hybrid heatsinks for quite a number of years and have discovered that copper usage is very important in making the heatsink work properly.

some second-tier mobo makers still in red
Published: Friday, July 16, 2004 | By: DennisThe numbers quoted in the article are in Taiwanese NT Dollars, divide by 30 and you will get a "close" US equivalent.
"A number of second-tier Taiwan motherboard makers were still operating in the red in the first half of this year despite increased shipments amid strong PC demand, according to sources at the makers.
Companies likely to suffer losses in the first half include Epox Computer, Soyo Computer, Chaintech Computer and Albatron Technology, the sources noted." -
Intel to Decide if on Alviso Delay
Published: Friday, July 16, 2004 | By: Dennis"Intel is likely to officially announce in the next few days whether to delay the launch of its Alviso chipset to the first quarter of next year, one quarter later than it originally planned, according to sources at Taiwanese makers and brand vendors like Dell and Hewlett Packard (HP).
A delay would confirm a DigiTimes June 16 report.
A delay has been expected since Intel informed local makers in late June that it found some problems in the extended VGA functionality of its PCI Express-enabled Sonoma-based platforms, the sources said."
For those that don't know the Alviso chipset is the moble edition to the current DDR2 line of Intel chipsets (Alderwood and Grantsdale) -
Alphacool Basic 80 mm Waterkit @ R&B
Published: Thursday, July 15, 2004 | By: DennisThese little 80mm watercooling kits appear to be little "toys" when compared to some of the others available and aside from having more parts they can be just as noisy as a similarly sized heatsink.
"Since this is a German online store the text on the bottle is in german and I cannot translate it for you :) I believe it's distilled water though. The radiator is very small compared to Blackice radiators but it's pretty thick which should not be a problem when mounting it in the case though. We have very very small fittings on the whole kit and therefore I think that this will be a perfect kit to mount in" -
Alphacool Cape Red Water Cooling Kit @ nVPlanet
Published: Thursday, July 15, 2004 | By: DennisThis reviewer has a good modding sense and though I suspect the way the review panned out was a complete mishap it did turn out to look very good. If only we all could be so lucky.
"The Alphacool Cape looks awesome, all our connections are sealed. We are confident that the system is stable and ready for some performance testing. We used a stock Intel HSF, our in house watercooling kit and the Alphacool Cape. Let's go check out some temperatures."
According to their "real-world" testing results the Alphacool Cape is right on par with the asetek WaterChill. -
Powercolor Radeon X800 Pro @ OverclockersClub
Published: Thursday, July 15, 2004 | By: Dennis"When I opened the UPS box that contained the Radeon X800 Pro, I was expecting to see the normal retail type box that most ATI Radeon cards come in. Instead, I saw a black backpack with Powercolor's logo engraved on it. It probably took me five minutes to find all of the cables and the video card itself, because this bag has so many pockets!"
It's not every day you pay for a free backpack with your video card. -
