motherboard makers may have collectively passed their peak
Published: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 | By: DennisIn econ class you learn about supply and demand and it would seem that too much supply has created a "cut throat" narrow market condition. Motherboards are still needed it just becomes difficult to explore new directions without knowing if you will turn a profit first.
"Long-term decline in revenue growth
Excluding a recovery between November 2001 and October 2002, year-on-year growth in monthly revenues has steadily declined, hitting a 12-month moving average of only 1.7% in January.
While the data is not complete, the numbers do not look good.
The data only includes unconsolidated revenues of 18 first, second and third-tier players. Some companies, such as Asustek Computer, report revenues from their China operations separately." -

U.S. on verge of private space travel
Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: DennisMy vote is with the Carmack team but I'm a little biased being the Quake fan that I am.
"Also competing is Armadillo Aerospace of Mesquite, Texas, headed by computer game designer John Carmack, who made a fortune on the games Doom and Quake. The team is testing its rocket engines and plans to launch this year." -
Original 'Star Wars' films coming to DVD
Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: DennisI have the original Trilogy (pre-Lucas fiddling) on VHS and have toyed with the idea of ripping them to VCD or DVD. If anyone has any suggestions for video filters to help clean up the video feed drop me a line.
"Lucasfilm and Fox chose the September release date to maximize on holiday gift buying during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn said."

Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: Dennis"While testing games and benchmarks, the screen resolution is always set at 1024 x 768 x 32. Each game is tested with and without Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering unless otherwise noted. In all tests, performance is set to "Quality" to create the best image quality."
Kick back on the couch, grab a drink and listen to the soothing sounds of Industrial metal during this review. It helps to numb the brain down to a dull roar. -
Grantsdale 915 motherboards in 2Q
Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: Dennis"Taiwanese makers will begin volume shipments of new Pentium 4 motherboards built on Intel’s Grantsdale 915 chipsets in the second quarter, according to sources at Taiwan’s motherboard makers.
The new motherboards support not only the LGA775 processors like Socket T Prescott but also the Entertainment PC concept that the chip giant unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January."
CES was a little while ago but any Grantsdale news is good news, that is unless you just became a proud owner of a new Canterwood not to long ago. -

Mad Dog Entertainer 7.1 Review @ The Tech Report
Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: Dennis"Who's the man now, dog?"
Woof, Meow.
Mad Dog stuff is pretty easy to find at the local ChumpUSA and is pretty much the cheap of the cheap when it comes to cost, for some that is more important.
I picked up a Mad Dog FX5200 the other day for a little side project. Surprisingly enough the card came with an active cooler for the GPU. A nice touch but the cooler wasn't anything special and overclocking was poor at best. -
CasEdge Diabolic Minotaur Review @ A True Review
Published: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 | By: DennisAs far as pre-modded custom cases go the Diabolic case is pretty good.
"Something that will freak you out in the middle of the night, those red glowing eyes. That is a cool effect. A little bit of blue picked up from the cold cathode, along with the curvature of the eyes, makes them look almost real."

Project Y2k-bug - Rebuilt
Published: Monday, February 9, 2004 | By: Dennis"I didn't plan to make any further updates in this worklog but it seems American Airlines almost succeeded with what most contractors failed with 4 years ago - to kill the Y2k-bug...
So this is how the bug looked like when it was taken out of it's sturdy flight case:"
I'm sure that some of you have seen this project; it is a Matrix'esq casemod in the shape of a bug complete with carbon fiber and watercooling. A must see for any hungry casemodder.
