  • Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Review @ Finclockers

Published: Sunday, May 4, 2003 | By: Dennis

As you might have guessed this review is not in English but the graphs are pretty universal. The board under review is based on the new, yet to be released, Springdale chipset from Intel but doesn't seem to bench any better than the ole Granite Bay chipset. Check it out for yourself.

  • Cooler Master Aero7 Review @ RadiativeNZ

Published: Sunday, May 4, 2003 | By: Dennis

This is becoming a very popular heatsink.
"The fan, as earlier mentioned, is a squirrelcage/blower type. It measures in at 70mm cubed (70 x 70 x 70) and is rated for 7 to 13.8v operation. The fan voltage is controlled manually by a potentiometer, in much the same way as the Aero7's stablemate the XDream does."

  • 400MHz FSB Athlon in mid-May, Intel to follow

Published: Friday, May 2, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to launch its new 400MHz FSB (front-side bus) Athlon XP processors in mid-May, shortly before rival Intel adds the top-end 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processor into its product line on May 21, motherboard makers revealed."
    --snip--
"Following the launch of its first 800MHz FSB-based P4, running at 3GHz, on April 14, Intel is set to introduce the 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8GHz models on May 21 along with its 865 (Springdale) series chipsets. According to motherboard sources, the chipmaker in fact will announce the 3.2GHz model together as well."

  • WDigital Raptor Review @ HardwareZone

Published: Friday, May 2, 2003 | By: Dennis

I still want one of these drives. Better yet, make it two. big grin smile
"At only 36GB, the Raptor should be suited for most serial ATA RAID setups. In the tests, the Raptor scored very well in both the Winbench 99 and HD Tach benchmarks; and the results are very convincing, to say the least. However, the real test was with IOmeter, where we managed to truly see where the WD Raptor stands in terms of high-end server storage performance. "
The Raptor isn't as fast as SCSI and doesn't have a true SATA controller but seek times are very low and the platters spin very fast!.

  • Gigabyte to Intro nForce2 Boards?

Published: Friday, May 2, 2003 | By: Dennis

I never realized that Gigabyte was out of the nForce2 game.
"Gigabyte Technology is said to have tied up with Nvidia again with plans to launch motherboards based on the chip designer’s nForce2 chipsets, according to sources.

A former member of the Nvidia camp for graphics card production, Gigabyte switched sides to join ATI Technologies group in 2002."

  • Gigabyte 7VAXP-A Ultra Review @ TweakTown

Published: Friday, May 2, 2003 | By: Dennis

Lately just about everything has been overshadowing VIA but that doesn't mean they are out of the game. TweakTown has reviewed a KT400A enabled mobo from Gigabyte and has this to say.
"Gigabyte also colour codes the CPU socket. This tends to look good under UV lights in modded cases; even if you don’t have UV lights it still looks great. The location of the IDE connectors is well arranged behind the DIMM slots."
Personally from the pictures I'm not a big fan of the color.

  • nForce2-roundup @ NordicHardware

Published: Friday, May 2, 2003 | By: Dennis

When you pack 5 nForce2 motherboards into a single review your bound to find something out.
"As we mentioned earlier in the review we can, after having tested all together seven different nForce2 motherboards, with great certainty say that the performance of the nForce2 chipset is very good no matter which board you chose. This is of course very positive for the consumer who does not have to worry about performance when choosing between the different models."
We discovered the same thing. big grin smile

This is the second version of the FRN that sports the new C1 stepped nFoce2 Northbridge. Our review of the original can be found here. Aside from the new chipset and upgraded BIOS the boards are identical.

  • SARS Concern to Postpone Computex Exhibition

Published: Thursday, May 1, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Triggered by concerns about the spread of SARS, more than 20 PC and motherboard manufacturers signed a petition letter asking the Taipei Computer Association (TCA) and China External Trade Development Council (CETRA) to consider postponing the Computex trade show."
A very good move, I heard if they went through with the show overseas visitors would have to remain in quarantine for 10 days before departing. Pretty much means that any one not from Taiwan will be staying almost two weeks longer than they first expected just to attend the largest tech show in the world. shock smile

  • Abit BH7 Review @ Cluboverclocker

Published: Thursday, May 1, 2003 | By: Dennis

A new mobo review from the neighboring hardware review site.
"I'm going to keep the testing very simple on this motherboard. I'm going to run it through the battery of tests from Sisoft Sandra, 3Dmark 2001 SE, and PCMark2002. This should give us a good idea of how the board is going to perform. I'm going to run each test at least three times. Once at default (18 x 133), and finally overclocked (18 x 170). The test system is as follows."
