Intel's dual-core push leads to discontinuation of two chips
Published: Thursday, May 20, 2004 | By: DennisThis might be old news for some of you out there but I still think its something we all should know about.
"The decision to cancel Tejas and Jayhawk was not related to any engineering or manufacturing difficulties in getting those chips ready for volume production, Kircos said. Reports had indicated that both chips consumed a great deal of power, even more than the Prescott processor released earlier this year.
Intel realized that it could accelerate the development of the dual core products to the point where it made more business sense to head in that direction, he said. "
I like the idea of two processor cores; they will be based on laptop designs for reasons of power consumption and heat output though it makes you wonder how the new configuration will effect overclocking? Typically in the past when two processors where installed the Northbridge kept the processors in check. It would seem to me that once both cores on are the same die that luxury goes away.
On a side note, how do you think performance watercooling will be affected by the shift to dual processor core technology? I have an idea, and possible solution, stay tuned for more info. -
Alienware Area51-m Extreme Review @ Hexus
Published: Thursday, May 20, 2004 | By: DennisThis review is somewhat special on a couple of levels mostly since Alienware has always been reluctant to send samples to hardware sites. Rather they prefer to send samples to places that don't do huge reviews thus avoiding the "digging too deep" issue that has been a problem in the past.
" Throw in features like 108Mbit WiFi, a widescreen 1.7Mpixel LCD, 6 speaker audio (!) and it's hard not to lust after one."
-- snip --
"It's big, hot and heavy, but I think that was a given before we even took a look at it physically. You have to decide if 4.0Kg/8.8lbs is something you can live with. It's certainly simple to lug around with the backpack though and it's not too bad on your lap, should you wish to brave cooked sausage and fried eggs for a quick game of UT2004.
Battery life is laughable in the strictest sense, but personally I'm not sure you'd care too much if you were interested in buying one, it's a DTR after all; portability and battery life are secondary concerns."
And it looks funny too. IMO. -
Intel 915 Chipset Preview @ t-break
Published: Thursday, May 20, 2004 | By: Dennis"The new Intel 915/ICH6 chipset supporting the upcoming Socket 755 is scheduled to debut in about a month’s time. Some information about this chipset has been making rounds on the Internet, like the lack of an AGP interface and Win 9X drivers. Today, we try to put together different pieces of information we have on this chipset- some of the technologies that this chipset will bring with itself."
I'm hoping to see some board samples using this chipset at Computex early next month, though I'm not holding my breath. -

Ancient Chinese Dremel Techniques @ TwistedMods
Published: Tuesday, May 18, 2004 | By: DennisI've been known to do some sweet cuts with a Dremel tool though I will admit I never had the desire to cut out a dragonhead with my Dremel.
"So, you want to cut a cool looking design, but you think you don’t have the right tools or the skills to actually cut it? Well get ready to learn a few dremeling techniques that will greatly improve your skills, and help you to make those cuts on small, challenging curves.

Poseidon WCL-03 @ PCUnleash
Published: Tuesday, May 18, 2004 | By: Dennis"Poseidon WCL-03 is easy to install and is very compact, as we mentioned. It only consists of two parts: one is the radiator and water tank set, the other being the water block and pump set. All parts above come completely assembled, and the inside has already been filled up with a water/antifreeze mixture."
I have seen quite a number of watercooling units on the market lately and they range from small little, fit anywhere, kits like this to full blown watercooler like the asetek WaterChill. It is hard to say what is the best for you though for the enthusiast the high-end is what to strive for as it will provide you with the least amount of noise and highest cooling capacity. -

Gigabyte K8VNXP Review @ Extreme Overclocking
Published: Monday, May 17, 2004 | By: Dennis"Gigabyte's DPS K8 is a daughter card that changes the board's regular 3-phase power into a 6-phase circuit. Basically, this will ensure higher stability when the system is under stress, as when being overclocked. The system will run fine without the add in card but using it should theoretically makes the system run cooler, putting less stress on the other power components, provide cleaner power, and possibly prolong the life of the board. The fan cooling the card does light up although the chipset cooler does not."
The extra power daughter card is a pretty cool idea though from what I know abut onboard power supplies if its designed right to begin with you shouldn't ever need more than 3 phases. -
DangerDen Water Block Reviews
Published: Monday, May 17, 2004 | By: DennisWe had an opportunity to review the Danger Den RBX not to long ago. The block was a good performer though from what I have seen retail samples vary in their interior finish, some are bead blasted whereas others are machine smooth.

NL: Review Block - Cases
Published: Monday, May 17, 2004 | By: DennisI was helping a friend install a watercooler into his Antec LanBoy this last weekend and I have to admit. The case is pretty sweet and super light but I wouldn't suggest that anyone buy one if you plan to mod the case or install anything other than an air cooler. The case doesn't mod well and the alu is rather difficult to work with.
