  • SIS760 Preview @ accelenation

Published: Tuesday, December 30, 2003 | By: Dennis

"While we don’t have a board in our labs yet, we will have one very soon. From the preliminary benchmarks we’ve seen, the SIS760 is very competitive with similar low-end add in card solutions."
An the preview is rather short too. tongue smile

  • OCZ EL DDR PC-3700 Gold Edition Review @ Madshrimps

Published: Tuesday, December 30, 2003 | By: Dennis

    ohhh shiny! big grin smile
"The Asus P4C enables PAT automatically when the FSB <= 200Mhz, this will set the RAS to CAS at 2. OCZ PC3700 did not work with this setting. So putting the PAT at standard instead of auto/turbo solved this issue, choosing memory timings CL2 2-3-5 the system booted up without problem and was stable up to 208Mhz.

Earlier PC3700+ memory had problems running at CL2 with such tight timings, but these sticks can handle it as long as you put RAS to CAS at 3."

I don’t believe what is being described here really is really the root of the issue at hand. I did however have similar problems with the Abit IS7 board and after a short discussion with Corsair it was discovered that the memory controller was actually at fault. This is a known issue and something that Intel has never fully addressed. To solve the problem Corsair had purposely set the RAS to CAS at 3 since 2 will cause system failures.

So to recap, its not PAT nor the memory module but rather the Intel chipset. (both Canterwood and Springdale). The issue with the Asus BIOS is an entirely different issue. wink smile

  • Scythe Kamakaze Heatsink Review @ Frosty Tech

Published: Monday, December 29, 2003 | By: Dennis

"The Kamakaze heatsink looks remarkably similar to the Alpha Novatech PAL8942 which was one massive, and very effective heatsink. Perhaps then, it is just a coincidence that both Alpha Novatech and Scythe are based in Japan."
This heatsink is pretty dang big but comes with mounting hardware to fit both the Pentium 4 and Athlon XP processors.

  • Chieftec BX Front Panels @ Raptor-Mods

Published: Monday, December 29, 2003 | By: Dennis

When casemodding it is very important to start with a case built of quality material by doing so you ensure that the mod will look good and last for a considerable amount of time. For the less avid modder out there the case styling can also become a factor so having an easy way to change the look is a plus.
"Well what can I say? Chieftec have come up with a great way of changing the look of your case with out having to buy expensive window kits or other modding products, just simple clip on/off panels that install in under 5 minutes."

  • T-Cube from T-Engine

Published: Monday, December 29, 2003 | By: Dennis

This is something that you will just have to see to believe but these tiny computers are about the size of a regular orange.
"On the exhibition TRONSHOW 2004 taking place in Japan was shown the set of interesting computer decisions. Microcomputer T-Cube was the most interesting exhibit in my view."
The above quote is made possible by Babelfish.

  • DFI LanParty NFII Ultra B Review @ HardwareZoom

Published: Monday, December 29, 2003 | By: Dennis

"We guess the formula that DFI took is to set a theme, and then throw in all the right "ingredients" to support that theme. After that, they just wait and hope for the best. Fortunately, they didn't need to wait very long because it proved to be a winner in its own ways."
I can agree with this statement, the LanParty series from DFI is by far the most cohesive motherboard package around. Keep an eye out the Ninjalane review of this board is in the works.

  • Albatron KX18D Pro II Review @ Bjorn3D

Published: Saturday, December 27, 2003 | By: Dennis

Here is one of the only Albatron motherboards with the floppy connector in a decent location. tongue smile Based on the board layout the KX18D seems to be one of their stripped down models but who knows for sure.
"I was looking for a FSB in the 210+ range with an 11.0 multiplier. Not happening on this occasion. No combination of voltages and speeds and so forth would let me get the FSB up on this board. Even cranking the multiplier down to 10.5 did not yield too many positive results."

  • Corsair TWINX1024-3700 Review @ Viper Lair

Published: Saturday, December 27, 2003 | By: Dennis

When it comes to DDR memory you have a ton of speeds to choose from though it is not always clear as to what memory is right for your particular situation. PC3700 memory is kind of an off size between DDR433 and DDR500 that comes with very relaxed timings.
"The TWINX PC3700 was an average overclocker. Forget about running at CAS2 at 233FSB, as the ram just could not do it. CAS2.5 did work though, but things were a bit shaky at 250FSB. I was able to run the ram at 250FSB at 2.5-4-3-7, but after 15 minutes at 2.8v, the system would still crash.

  • Hitachi 7K250 Serial ATA Raid 0 Review @ Envy News

Published: Saturday, December 27, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Is this the set of drives you’re looking for to build your file server, storage box, or just to power your main machine? For most applications, I’d recommend building a RAID_0 array with the 7K250 hard drives without reservation."
We have started using these drives on our test bench as well. For those of you that don't know Hitachi bought the Deskstar HDD line from IBM and started making drives under the Hitachi Deskstar name. Like the original the new Hitachi drives are super fast and easy to use.
