  • MSI 848P Neo-LS Review @ Extreme Overclocking

Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 | By: Dennis

"When the Intel 875/865 chipsets were released, they became an instant success with the incorporation of an 800MHz FSB, dual 64-bit memory controllers, native serial ATA, and official support for DDR400. These features are nice, but do not come cheap. Not everyone can afford to dish out $100-$200+ just for a motherboard."
This is a review of an i848P enabled motherboard from MSI, it's basically an i865PE with a single channel memory controller, not the most ideal solution for a gaming platform but the boards are cheaper. wink smile

  • Airflow and Heat: A cooling guide @ Short-Media

Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 | By: Dennis

Even though the site name implies "short" the guide is far from it. big grin smile Actually they come to the same conclusion that many seasoned casemodders already knew. To many fans can actually be bad thing.
"We would be lying if we weren't. It was our assumption that the tests with ALL the fans in operation would produce the best results but it didn't. Time to idle represents how effectively the configuration removes heat from the PC case. The shorter the time the better."
The methods are rough but the info and diagrams help get the point across.

  • Cooler Master Cool Drive 4 Review @ GruntvillE

Published: Monday, October 13, 2003 | By: Dennis

Coolermaster HDD cooling at its best?
"Cooler Master explains, "The CoolDrive 4 combines all of the functions of our newly released Aerogate II & the solid hard disk drive cooling device like our CoolDrive 3. It provides you solid protection for the hard worked data, the convenience of being able to monitor 4 different important component temperatures, as well as controlling all 4 corresponding fans.""
Is it good? Hard to tell since It really depends on where you place your sensors. The front of the drive will be cool due to the placement of the fan but the back will be as hot if not hotter than the drive without the cooler.

  • Computex`2003: Expo coverage

Published: Monday, October 13, 2003 | By: Dennis

"All the large expo events in Taiwan are under the patronage of the "Cetra", with Computex being their major headache and national pride. Most part of the Taiwanese budget comes from the turnover tax of high-tech companies, and admit this offers much more prestige and adds more interest than stupidly pump out oil and produce monstrous tractors dubbed "Zhiguli".

The press conference was opened by the big boss of Cetra, then handed over to the mayor of Taipei - well, we were really amazed and impressed..I managed to cross his walking way and immediately was drawn off to a more suitable place by the guards.. they just grabbed me by the shoulders and carried me over like a flake. Well, I really had no idea that guy was their president! "

Ninjalane was there too, check out our coverage in four easy installments.

  • Ximeta Netdisk Review @ Ascully

Published: Monday, October 13, 2003 | By: Dennis

"The Ximeta NetDisk can also be used in a sort of Raid array that Ximeta like to call "Aggregate" mode. Using the tool provided you can join NetDisk on your network up to 1.6 terabytes. Yep, that's 160 gigabytes of storage goodness. You can also use two NetDisks in mirrored mode which allows one disk to make a backup of the other useful for the extra paranoid amongst you."
This is something that we normally wouldn't post but its pretty cool; think of it as a fileserver without the server. happy smile

  • Chaintech Apogee FX71 Review @ HardwareZone

Published: Monday, October 13, 2003 | By: Dennis

The GeForce FX5600 would actually be a pretty impressive GPU if the memory interface were larger than 128 bits but it makes an excellent mainstream video card. For comparison check out our review of the Gainward Ultra 760XP.
"Chaintech calls their cooling solution the Gas-Turbine Technology, but despite their fancy naming scheme, it appears no different from other graphics card’s implementations. It claims to cool better than other cooling solutions, but our testing reveals otherwise. Don’t get us wrong. The Chaintech Apogee FX71’s cooling solution kept the card within reasonable operating temperatures and there are no heat concerns, but when compared to an equivalent card from another vendor (e.g. MSI), we found the Apogee FX71 a tad warmer"
They love that MSI over there at HardwareZone, almost too much.

  • PolarFLO Waterblock Review @ GruntvillE

Published: Saturday, October 11, 2003 | By: Dennis

There have been quite a few companies making CPU blocks with 3 barbs and from what I've seen the design is quite effective.
" Did you notice the 3 barbs? Good. As the Key Features state, the center barb is for the cool water to come in and the outside barbs are for the newly heated water to leave."
There is a pretty high gloss on this waterblock, almost to high. wink smile

  • PSU Mod @ CreativeMods

Published: Saturday, October 11, 2003 | By: Dennis

This power supply mod is rather simple but quite unique mostly due to the inherent danger rating of playing with an item such as this.
" Now let’s talk about the Dangers of Modding a PSU. First the really large capacitors in there hold a large load of power, and they can discharge in a flash right into you. This may not kill you but you will think twice about playing with a capacitor again."
"Caps" can hold a hefty charge for quite a long time so please be sure to never open a power supply unless it has been properly discharged and disconnected from a power source for a considerable amount of time.

  • Thermaltake Xaser LanFire Review @ FastLaneHW

Published: Saturday, October 11, 2003 | By: Dennis

Watch out! LanFire in the fast lane, please pass on the right. tongue smile
" There are literally hundreds of options out there for computer cases. Some are plain, some are premodded, some are cheap, and some...well...aren't. Today we'll be taking a look at a new case from Thermaltake, dubbed the Xaser LanFire. The LanFire brings together the two things that some enthusiasts want most; pre-mods up the wazoo in an easy-to-transport design."
For a pre-mod these ThermalTake cases are pretty cool to look at and have tons of space.

  • Epox 4PDA2+ Review @ myWorld Hardware

"Choosing a motherboard can sometimes be very hectic. With so many different companies throwing out their products for sale, users alike may find it confusing to get the board which they would really suits them well."
Confused?? ya same here but the photos are good. big grin smile
