Intel I875P Canterwood Review @ TweakTown
Published: Monday, April 21, 2003 | By: DennisIntel sent out quite a few of these boards for review, I think its time I contacted Intel about why I never get the cool stuff.
"While not originally intended for the desktop sector, but more towards entry level servers and workstations, the Granite Bay or E7205 chipset was Intel'ts first leap forward for the Pentium 4. Designed as the first Dual Channel DDR SDRAM platform for the Pentium 4 CPU with AGP 8x support, it was a large hit due to its increased memory bandwidth. Now Intel moved this a few steps forward with the Canterwood I875P chipset which we present to you a few days later after the NDA expired due to server issues we were experiencing."
Don't mind the lack of cellpadding it only makes the review that much harder to read. -
Inspire vs. MegaWorks Speaker Review @ NordicHardware
Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 | By: Dennis"To make a sequel to the review of Creative's Audigy2/ Audigy2 Platinum Ex and continue on the sound theme, I will now take a closer look at two different speaker systems. The speaker systems are Creative's Inspire 6.1 6700, and with the long name: Cambridge SoundWorks MegaWorks 5.1 550 THX."
I'm still running a set of Altec Lansing 4.1's on my desktop and they appear to work just fine for now, though to be honest I’m still holding out for a good set of computer speakers with optical inputs to be released. So in the meantime I'll be watching all of my movies on the big screen downstairs. -
The Tech Lounge is Back
Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 | By: DennisAccording to the press release they were under a DOS attack.
"As you might have noticed, The Tech Lounge was down
for a while last week, and some of your viewers may not have been able to goto our site from your news links. This was due to a DOS attack, but it is over, and we lost nothing. This is just an FYI, and to let you know that our site is still up."
I bet it was some hardcore Anandtech supporters. -
Albatron PX845PEV-800 Review @ MonkeyReview
Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 | By: Dennis"To celebrate its one year anniversary, Albatron is offering a limited edition motherboard that offers a 800MHz FSB by overclocking Intel’s 845PE chipset. To mark the occasion, the words “Anniversary Special Edition” as well as the Albatron president’s signature are plated onto the face of the board in a sleek metallic print."
Be sure to check out the pretty lights on the Northbridge cooler. -
Inno3D GeForce FX 5200 @ PC TechZone
Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 | By: DennisIn the past I've had good luck with the Inno3D stuff, its a cheaper alternative to the "name brand" video cards out there while still providing good performance.
"For a card that has 250 clock and 400 memory it is going from strength to strength. At the start of the review I was saying that this card would only be good for casual gamers. Now after running some intesive graphical games on it and not forgetting that the Ti4200 card has a higher memory speed I am absolutely asstounded ! I did not expect this kind of performance from the card whatsoever. It is the low end card from the new FX range and it can do this, its pretty amazing."
The card features passive cooling as well, not sure if that is a bonus or a negative but it's available. -
Albatron PX845PE Pro II Review @ bit-tech
Published: Friday, April 18, 2003 | By: DennisThey cover a wide variety of Albatron boards in this review all with similar names so be sure to pay attention.
"I have heard mixed feelings over the silver colour of this board. On one hand, love the silver (even nicer than the blue PCB that the PX845PEV Pro comes with). On the other hand there are those who would rather have something in black."
At least the floppy connector isn't under the last PCI slot. -
Women Need Wider Screens for Virtual Navigation?
Published: Thursday, April 17, 2003 | By: Dennis"Women who navigate around 3D computer-generated environments for a living - or even for fun - are having their style cramped by ultra-narrow computer displays and graphics software that favours men."
--snip--
"It may sound like sexual prejudice, but it seems that men's much-debated ability to navigate slightly better than women applies in virtual environments as well as the real world. And on average, says Microsoft computer scientist Mary Czerwinski, men are quicker to create a mental map of an environment and orient themselves within it."

Albatron PX845PEV-800 Review @ myWorldHardware
Published: Thursday, April 17, 2003 | By: DennisThis Albertron is a black beauty of a mobo if I do say so myself, though it still has the floppy connector under the last PCI slot.
The overclocking performance seems to be typical of most i845PE motherboards (including the Soltek we have here in house) though I have seen better.
"Impressively, I managed to overclock the FSB to 155MHz, that was 155 x 4 = 620MHz Quad-Pumped speed. There are a few times when I failed to reboot the computer with the new clock settings, leaving my comp hang." -
Crucial PC2700 Review @ Adrians Rojak Pot
Published: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 | By: DennisI never actually tried to overclock Crucial memory since the modules tend to lack in the aggressive timings department. Though the rojakpot.com guys had no problems what so ever. Just to think 412Mhz from a module without heatspreaders.
"Note that Crucial absolutely does NOT support overclocking. Running Crucial memory outside of specifications will void the warranty. When you overclock Crucial's DIMMs, you are doing so at your own risk. But frankly, with such a excellent memory module, it would be hard not to overclock it. In fact, overclocking it is a piece of cake! Overclockers should definitely consider this DIMM for their systems."

800MHz FSB P4 Shipments Back to Normal
Published: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 | By: DennisStarting next week.
I didn't actually post news of the P4 Shipment halt since I didn't expect it to last more than a week or so. Looks like I was right. The Pentium 4 3.00Ghz 200Mhz FSB processors are back on track, yeah!!
