  • Quickie Soldering Iron Stand

Published: Friday, January 24, 2003 | By: Dennis

Using a coat hanger you to can make your own soldering iron holder.
"Final note: Since we are talking about a potential fire hazard in the event of failure...make sure to test it well before using it. Make sure the metal is strong enough. Carefully set the angle of the spring (should be angled to allow easier insertion of the iron, but not angled so far that it causes the stand to flip over)."

  • Blowing Stuff Up at [H]ard|OCP

Published: Thursday, January 23, 2003 | By: Dennis

They sound so proud when they break stuff it is almost sickening. sad smile Here is the story, using a couple of VapoChill units (not sure what that means), an ASUS P4G8X motherboard and the latest 3.06Ghz Pentium 4 processor the [H] guys set out to make and break 4.2Ghz. Breaking is what ended up happening, under the extreme change in temperature the processor "exploded" (more like cracked) disconnecting the heat spreader from the processor core cracking it down the middle.
"While booting the machine up for another round of testing, I heard an audible *POP* come from the inside of the open VapoChill PE case, and the monitor went black. Anyone who has ever overclocked their processor knows the horrible feeling you get when this particular combination of events happens. "

Does anyone still make socket 370 board??

  • VapoChill PE S478 Titanium Review @ VR-Zone Hardware

Published: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 | By: Dennis

Have you ever noticed that all of the VapoChill reviews used Pentium 4 systems?? I think I know why. For the past few weeks I've had a VapoChill case here in the lab and decided to fire it up using a Soltek SL-75FRV. Installation was a breeze though was some concern with the evaporator. Not many review sites show you what the other side of the evaporator head looks like and for good reason is only a 1" copper disk surrounded by closed cell foam. This is the only thing that makes contact with your CPU and moves around quite easily. Needless to say I am down one XP2000+. angry smile

If you can get the system up and running the results are astounding. i.e 1.8@3.5GHz!
"Sheesh almost a 95% overclock from a B0 stepping CPU. Makes you wonder what if I had a more powerful supply doesn't it? Least I can stop thinking that people can't possibly use more than 400W efficiently. I now know there is a beast that could be unleashed with a larger power supply."

  • Springdale Boards in 2Q

Published: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 | By: Dennis

From a graphics card maker no less.
"Graphics card maker CP Technology is planning to make another attempt in the motherboard market in the second quarter of 2003 with new products based on Intel’s Springdale platform and Radeon IGP series integrated chipsets from ATI Technologies."
I wonder if they will be any good?

  • Segway Banned in San Francisco

Published: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 | By: Dennis

Has a nice ring to it huh? Well the city known for accepting the strange and unusual says that the Segway is dangerous and has banned its usage.
" In hilly San Francisco, officials feared the battery-powered Segways would cause more problems than they would solve, particularly for the disabled and senior citizens. "
Sounds like a diversionary tactic to me.
"Ammiano also said Segway's campaign rubbed officials the wrong way.

"Segway didn't help themselves by hiring very expensive lobbyists," he said. "I think that backfired on them, too." "

    Thought so. sad smile

  • ASUS A7N8X Review @ OcCC

Published: Monday, January 20, 2003 | By: Dennis

The site name was waaaaaaayy to long and to add insult to injury check out the disclaimer at the top. big grin smile
"Editor's Note: This is a reader submitted review. In other words, it was done entirely by the reader (and/or his group) and with his own resources. It does not reflect on the viewpoint on any of the Overclockers Club Canada staff, nor has this particular product been touched on by any OCC Canada staff member. "
Nothing like jumping to conclusion before the conclusion was concluded.

  • Overclocking your iPaq Pocket PC

Published: Monday, January 20, 2003 | By: Dennis

"The PXA250 has a variety of clocks in the system that are configurable and interrelated. I just spent time to find the combo that gave the best performance while being 100% stable. There are several faster combos that appear stable but don't work under full load or are flaky with storage cards. Clear Speed has been tested for weeks and was started before I heard of anyone looking into the concept."
People have been doing this sort of thing with their Palm for quite some time now, every little bit of speed helps.
