  • Overclocking the Athlon64 754 @ OCIA

Published: Tuesday, March 1, 2005 | By: Dennis

The guys at OCIA discuss the issues around overclocking the 754Pin Athlon64. While they claim that the Single channel memory controller is the limiting factor in their system I've heard that having drives hooked into the SATA controller is a primary annoyance when it comes to overclocking, at least on the nForce3.
"It was at this point I did some research and learned that 230 FSB was right around the limit for the 754 motherboards/CPU. The reason for this is the fact that the 754 incorporates a single memory controller, built into the CPU. With a GiG of RAM at anything higher than 230 FSB, the controller simply fails, resulting in system instability."
230Mhz FSB was about our limit as well.

  • nForce4 SLI, Real World System @ Bjorn3D

Real World ASUS SLI setup.. Not sure if they are just braggin or someone actually wants to see the system run in the real-world..

    You decide.
"The first thing I want to point out is this is not just a review of SLI; I am going to look at several aspects of the nForce4 chipset. Also this is not a clean install machine being looked at. This is a REAL WORLD machine. It is loaded with all the tools I use for work and things that most computer users would have installed and running. So the performance numbers you see on things should show you how your machine would perform if you had the same system I have built."
I think they is just braggin.

  • DFI LANParty UT NF4 Ultra-D Review @ The Tech Report

Published: Tuesday, March 1, 2005 | By: Dennis

DFI has quickly become one of the top companies supplying motherboards to enthusiasts all due in part to the gamble surrounding the LANParty series of motherboards.

We have reviewed quite a few of these boards in the past and it used to be that Ninjalane was the only site showing you what the board looked like under the UV light. It would appear that other sites are slowly catching on.
"In recent years, DFI's LANParty line has mastered many of the little things that can make a motherboard unique. With great bundles, loads of BIOS options, and other intelligent extras, the LANParty boards have quickly become favorites among enthusiasts"

Here is the overclockers board to have, now all I need is to get me some of that. big grin smile
"All of that is nothing though compared to what the nF4 Ultra-D is capable of - it blitzes past the 300 Mhz mark easily. Prime95 would fail within a few minutes at 369 - at 368 it took about 6 hours before an errors showed up. Playing it a bit conservatively, we ended up dropping the FSB down to 365 and the nF4 ran Prime95 for over 48 hours before we concluded that the board and processor were completely stable."

  • AMD Cool’n’Quiet How-To @ Envy News

Published: Monday, February 28, 2005 | By: Dennis

Is that Athlon64 just too hot for you? wanna be able to run them fans on the lowest setting? Enable that cool and quiet, on most mobos you will find the feature in the BIOS.
"With Cool’n’Quiet enabled, chip voltage and multiplier drop significantly. With the same HTT speed, the multiplier drop from 10x to 5x effectively cuts the speed down to barely over 1 Ghz. Voltage drops too, hovering barely below 1.07"

  • XGBox Viper case reviewed @ XtremeResources

Published: Monday, February 28, 2005 | By: Dennis

Here is a really funky gaming case review at Xtreme Resources. I don't think I would ever be caught dead with this thing but it does look nice.
"This is a great case, though lacking the 120mm fan options for intake and exhaust, this is a great fully stacked case for anyone wanting that unique look that does'nt fit in with all the factory modified cases that we've seen in the past. The XGBox Viper gets a definite 9 out of 10 stars vote from me here."

  • Soyo KT880 Dragon 2 Review @ FastLaneHW

Published: Thursday, February 24, 2005 | By: Dennis

Does anyone even care about Soyo anymore?? I seem to remember that Soyo was the bomb back in the day though the products had a nasty problem of not living up to the hype.
"This board certainly has some nice features. One big feature which is not present on previous boards from Soyo is support for Dual Channel. Another big feature is the support for four SATA drives and eight IDE drives. Yes, that is twelve devices. Simply amazing."
Does anyone remember what "DRAGON" stands for??

  • Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 @ Viper Lair

Published: Thursday, February 24, 2005 | By: Dennis

We have been really impressed with the K8T890 Pro offering from Soltek (see our review here) and it would seem that the Viper Lair peeps feel the same way.
"One item that we've seen in a few boards is a diagnostic LED. The SL-K890Pro-939 places this LED at the edge of the board, near the last PCI slot. The manual includes the code translations, but this is a nice feature that will assist veterans and newbies alike when troubleshooting thier system."
However the quote doesn't convey that message. wink smile
