  • Duke Nukem Forever to use Doom 3 Engine

Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 | By: Dennis

"Misstatement by Take-Two CEO Rich Roedel to the press sets off a firestorm of speculation."
It would seem that the Gamespot press has NO sense of humor.
"However, it now appears Roedel's official statement to the press was in error. An item on Shacknews today from 3D Realms' George Broussard flatly denies the Doom 3 engine will be used. "We are not using the Doom 3 engine for Duke Nukem Forever," he said. However, Broussard and other 3D Realms employees declined GameSpot's repeated requests to comment on why the head of Duke Nukem Forever's publisher would make such a public mistake."
Err. Well prolly cause the statement wasn't a mistake but a very cleaver play on words designed to pimp the Duke Nukem Forever game (and 3D Realms) once again.

In case some of you don't know the Duke Nukem Forever game was announced shortly after the rising success of Duke Nukem 3D back in the mid-90's. However shortly after (or before) the engine switch from Q2 to Unreal a black hole in the game development surfaced. Of course due to the hype behind the game it would be detrimental to 3D Realms to say anything bad about DN4 so the company simply said nothing. To this day if you check the 3D Realms website you will find a "When its done" phrase (similar to what id used for Doom 3) describing when the game is due to be released.

I for one can’t wait to see Duke Nukem Forever, though if they do use the 3 engine I hope they at least turn the lights on. wink smile

  • Ultra 1GB PC3200 @ Phoronix

Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 | By: Dennis

"The first thing, even before noticing the RAM, you will see its package. The Ultra RAM ships inside a wooden box, which is quite unusual. When looking at the box, it's made of mahogany with “Ultra” written on the middle of the box in gold lettering. This mahogany box does slightly resemble a small humidor – a container designed specifically for storing cigars and keeping them at a constant humidity level."
Now all we need is a smoking jacket and some Fabreeze.

  • PolarFLO TT Water Block @ Viper Lair

Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 | By: Dennis

" Although air-cooling is still viable for the majority of users, water cooling has jumped by leaps and bounds, especially in the past couple years thanks to a few companies offering turnkey solutions. No longer restricted to hardcore enthusiasts, water-cooling has become easier to acquire and setup."
Dem blocks is perdy but under closer inspection you can see how there could be clearance issues on many motherboards.

  • Danger Den TDX @ Hard-h20

Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 | By: Dennis

I really like the TDX, its a compact solution to the RBX while still provided ample cooling performance.
"The lapping is decent, although it is not a perfect mirror finish: the thermal paste will lessen this minor shortfall."
I know everyone loves to have a mirror finish on the their waterblocks but aside from making it look great it doesn't always mean the surface is complexly flat. Take into consideration that many users apply way to much thermal paste and any surface to surface benefits of a mirror finish are quickly removed.

  • Dual Core Processing: More questions than you can shake a stick at

Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 | By: Dennis

Seriously, there seems to be more questions in this article than answers but every once in awhile you find a "nugget" if useful info.
"We knew that HyperTransport Technology would provide for a faster connection to system memory, the GPU and the rest of the motherboard but back in the fall of 2003 we thought of the extra HyperTransport link as a connection to another physical processor.

It didn't dawn on us that the "extra" processor could be on the same die. While some will say "I knew that" most didn't pick up on it."
