  • Western Digital Raptor Preview @ StorageReview

Published: Friday, March 7, 2003 | By: Dennis

StorageReview has gotten a chance to review a beta version of the new SerialATA drive from Western Digital. Based on the previous Special Edition 8meg drives I have high hopes for the new "Raptor", though they might have taken on too much at one time.
"Many readers may be disappointed with the Raptor's relatively lackluster desktop performance. For various reasons, enthusiasts view an increased spindle speed as the largest factor in single-user performance. The reality, however, is that desktop usage predominately consists of highly-localized patterns and is affected more by caching strategies than marginal mechanical improvements. Western Digital's JB series may very well continue to stand as the premiere choice for those seeking the ultimate in single-user speed."

  • Go.com is Using Google!

Published: Thursday, March 6, 2003 | By: Dennis

Back in the day my most favorite search engine was Infoseek, the engine was fast and for the most part I could find what I was looking for very quickly along with getting news and stock information. Since the sale of Infoseek some time ago the face of the site has changed. infoseek.com will redirect you to infoseek.go.com which we can gather by the graphics is a Disney owned company. At the time go.com used one of them highly abused "pay" type search engines that never returned any real results so I always went to google.com to find stuff. That is until now, go.com is using google happy smile.

Most of you prolly won't care either way since google.com isn’t going anywhere, but as far as portal sites go, go.com is gaining a little credibility back in my book.

For the past few months I've been staring at a VapoChill case here in the Ninjalane Labs wondering, why does everyone like these things so much? So I decided to throw a system together and give the VapoChill case a run for its money, the resulting article reflects my "Impressions" of it.

  • AOPEN AK79G Max Image Gallery @ OCWorkBench

Published: Thursday, March 6, 2003 | By: Dennis

OCworkbench has posted quite a few images of the new nForce2 board from AOpen and so far everything looks pretty good. Heatsink mounting holes, dual bios, 2 maybe 3 phase power supply, Southbridge heatsink, and active Northbridge cooling. The board actually uses the graphics enabled chipset so it might not be as desirable for the overclocker, though time will tell.

Make sure to also check out the WinBios feature that allows you to change bios features from any Win2k/WinXP desktop, scary.

  • ATI Announces new Radeon Chips

Published: Thursday, March 6, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Graphics chip designer ATI Technologies on March 5 officially launched three new graphics chip series, the Radeon 9800, Radeon 9600 and Radeon 9200, for the desktop market.

Based on the R350 core, the Radeon 9800 features a 256-bit memory interface and eight powerful pixel pipelines. In addition, the new chip also offers programmable shader engines and support for Microsoft’s DirectX 9 and the OpenGL standards."

Like I expected quite a few sites have already released reviews of this new card/chip and I think Anand says it best:
"ATI comes to the rescue with a true competitor to the Radeon 9700 Pro - the Radeon 9800 Pro"

" NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The federal government will unveil a new $20 bill that will introduce a predominant but subtle color into the background, marking the first time in modern history that a U.S. bill will feature a color other than green.

According to the Treasury Department, other changes will include new images of Andrew Jackson and the White House, as well as other adjustments that are being kept secret. The official unveiling will take place on March 27, with the new bill entering circulation in the fall. "

  • Next Gen Radeon (9800 Pro) Preview @ NordicHardware

Published: Thursday, March 6, 2003 | By: Dennis

I have a feeling there will be a ton of these previews today so keep your eyes open, I also suspect they will say about the same thing. happy smile
" Judging by our performance evaluation we'd say that the 9800 Pro is roughly 20% faster (than the 9700 Pro) in most of the tests that actually count. Perhaps ATi will impress us further when the F-buffer comes into play later on. As for Doom III performance the 9800 Pro has the potential to be faster than the 9700 Pro (clock for clock that is)."

  • Springdale Boards Top Mfg Lists at CeBIT

Published: Wednesday, March 5, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Motherboards based on Intel’s new 865 (Springdale) and 875 (Canterwood) chipsets are expected to enjoy the sole spotlight at the CeBIT Hannover exhibition beginning next week, as Taiwanese chipset designers have still not obtained technology licensing for the 800MHz FSB (front-side bus) standard, the new feature of the Springdale platform.

As a result, in addition to Springdale and Canterwood products, board makers will focus on featuring Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) K8-based motherboards, Nvidia GeForce FX 5800 series graphics cards and ATI Technologies Radeon 9800 series cards as well as WLAN (wireless local area network) products."
