  • Chaintech GeForce FX card

Published: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 | By: Dennis

I've noticed that many companies are being pretty hush hush when it comes to showing off their designs for the GeForce FX but not Chaintech. Here is a card that not only looks pretty cool but also has built in lighting effects. shock smile

  • Nvidia Expected to Dump GeForce FX??

Published: Monday, February 10, 2003 | By: Dennis

Some rumors don't hold enough water to be taken seriously.
"SOURCES CLOSE to Nvidia tell the INQUIRER that the graphics firm has told its partners that the GeForce FX is likely to be discontinued, with the firm instead concentrating on the NV35 platform.

The sources said that the firm has made the move because of an update that its bitter rival ATI is expected to soon roll out of the door."

Kyle from [H]ard|OCP posted info over the weekend about this move by nVidia, concluding that the GeForceFX Ultra would never reach retail shelves. sad smile Considering the performance, and lateness to market I think getting the NV30 out the door and quickly washing their hands of it is the best move for the company. Now they can move full bore into NV35 production and hopefully get rid of the huge blower. big grin smile

  • Abit NF7-S Review @ Digital-Daily

Published: Monday, February 10, 2003 | By: Dennis

Here is another nForce2 board that uses the 4-pin power connector. To bad it doesn't appear to be overclocker friendly.
"At speeds like 166 MHz and higher the radiator is simply red-hot - :) I first noticed that on the Epox 8RDA+ board - that time the chipset radiator seemed hot to touch. But when I removed the radiator, put out the thermal pad resembling chewing gum and then fitted the radiator back on KPT-8, I felt the aluminum radiator burning my fingers. "

  • AMD Introduces Barton-Core

Published: Monday, February 10, 2003 | By: Dennis

"According to AMD, the Athlon XP 3000+ offers a total on-chip cache memory of 640KB, an increase of nearly 70% over previous AMD Athlon XP processors, and a FSB (front-side bus) speed of 333MHz."
The new proc is a little 'spensive right now but it is nice to actually see a new proc on the market.

  • K8 Delay Good for Business

Published: Monday, February 10, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Taiwanese chipset designers VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) expressed little disappointment regarding yet another delay by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in launching its K8-core Athlon 64 processors, stating that the postponement may in fact help maintain chipset prices as well as their profits."
A little delay isn't always bad. wink smile

  • AMD Barton Reviews

Published: Monday, February 10, 2003 | By: Dennis

It would seem that the NDA has lifted on the new Athlon processor codenamed: Barton. The processor is basically a Tbred processor with twice the L2 cache (512), and a 166Mhz FSB. On paper this processor looks as though it will fly, though it doesn’t seem to be much faster than a equally clocked Tbred.

I’ve listed a few Barton reviews below, though if you search around you’ll find a few more.

  • nForce2 Reviews - reference system

Published: Sunday, February 9, 2003 | By: Dennis

I have seen a few comments stating that I should have compared the Soltek Sl-75FRN to some of the more common nForce2 boards out there like the Epox EP-8RDA+. Well I assure you that tried to use the 8RDA+ as the reference system in the 75FRN review but unfortunately the Epox that I received was DOA and is currently in the process of being RMA'ed to the mfg.

  • MSI 655 Max Reveiw @ Anandtech

Published: Friday, February 7, 2003 | By: Dennis

The Anandtech motherboard review gang takes has the SiS655 enabled motherboard from MSI. Incase you don't remember this is a dual channel DDR chipset for the Pentium 4 platform supporting DDR333. So far this is the second board that we've seen with this chipset, could there be more?

  • Chaintech 9EJS1 ZENITH Review @ Viper's Lair

Published: Friday, February 7, 2003 | By: Dennis

"Chaintech uses a nice gold heatsink and fan combo (as well as the biggest fan grill I've seen on such a small fan) to cool the Northbridge down. The Northbridge doesn't run very warm, but when you're overclocking, any extra cooling will help. In case you're wondering, the fan grill on the Northbridge does not get in the way of heatsink installation."
This is a i845PE enabled motherboard from Chaintech. Even though they claim that it doesn't overclock very well they still got 3Ghz out of their 2.4B.

  • Soyo P4I 845PE Review @ Overclockers NZ

Published: Friday, February 7, 2003 | By: Dennis

It would appear that the growing trend to integrate and bundle less has hit Soyo, though in this case I don't see it as a bad thing. They have posted some good overclocking and tweaking results but have taken issue with some of their marketing decisions.
" P4I 845PE isn't the ordinary Soyo motherboard. Soyo cuts down the usual heavy loaded accessories and made some improvements on performance and overclocking. The choice of onboard chips is somewhat different from other makers. The overall features offered looks nice at glace but a bit weak when examined in details. 4-Channel sound is below today's standard sound 6-channel sound is the standard feature these days."
This is inspiring me to finish my comments system this weekend. big grin smile Now if it happens, that is another story.
