  • Albatron PX845E @ SubZeroTech

Published: Tuesday, October 8, 2002 | By: Dennis

It would appear that Silver is the hot color for PCB's lately and the Albatron PX845E is no exception. I would quote a little about the review but I can't get their site to do anything in Netscape 7.0, I got images blinking all over the place and even sometimes disappear on mouseover. I couldn’t located a problem in their code so I'm guessing they have some sick twisted love for IE.

  • Asus P4PE i845PE Review @ Explosive Labs

Published: Monday, October 7, 2002 | By: Dennis

Watch your step but Explosive Labs has reviewed the first i845PE mainboard available the Asus P4PE. (Not sure I like the name that much.....) but based on the benchmarks alone I think this chipset from Intel will hit big with the enthusiast crowd.

  • DDR333 Chipsets from Intel

Published: Monday, October 7, 2002 | By: Dennis

The big news so far is a a few new chipset releases from Intel featuring official DDR333 memory support, Hyper-Threading, and PC1066 RDRAM. We all know that Rambus is on its way out in Intel's eyes and Hyper-Threading won't become a reality until the 3.0GHz processors are released later this year leaving the yummy stuff to be DDR333.

"Intel has released quite a few 845 chipsets in 2002. In fact, after today's official announcement, Intel will have released seven different 845 chipsets this year alone, not including the first 845 chipset that was introduced late last year (PC133-only). These chipsets include the 845D, 845E, 845G and 845GL not to mention today's announcements of the 845PE, 845GE and 845GV. "

Given the virtual alphabet soup of i845 chipsets out there I can imagine this announcement doesn't make many motherboard makers happy. Just imagine the unique inventory problems this could create.

On a side note Soltek released a bios update for the SL-85DR-C allowing you to overclock the i845D chipset to run 533MHz P4's. cool smile

  • NV30 to Debut at Comdex

Published: Friday, October 4, 2002 | By: Dennis

It looks like Comdex should be quite good this year.

"Nvidia has reportedly decided to officially introduce its top-end NV30 chip at the Comdex Fall exhibition, to be held in Las Vegas from November 18-22, after delaying the roll-out for months to change the design from a six-pipeline to eight-pipeline architecture.

Supporting cards will hit the market shortly afterwards and will be launched in at least two different clock speed versions."

  • Companies to Profit from Mitsubishi-Hitachi Merger

Published: Friday, October 4, 2002 | By: Dennis

The main company to benefit from the merger is Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) being that they will be supplying the logic IC's to what will become Japan's largest semiconductor firm.

"Mitsubishi Electric and Hitachi announced on October 3 that they will merge their system LSI operations into a new company called Renasas Technology, with Hitachi holding a 55% stake and Mitsubishi 45%. According to sources, the combined investment will total 50 billion yen (about US$400 million)."

    --more--

"The new company, which will be Japan’s largest semiconductor firm, expects to reach sales of 900 billion yen (about US$7.3 billion) for fiscal year 2003 and leap past Samsung Electronics to become the second-largest semiconductor firm in the world, just behind Intel." shock smileshock smilecool smile

  • The Worlds Funniest Joke

Published: Thursday, October 3, 2002 | By: Dennis

The joke with the highest global rating, meaning that more people in the entire world voted for it is as follows:

"Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says: "Calm down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says: "OK, now what?""

    LOL big grin smile

I'm amazed they actually did some real research; check out the article for more info.

  • Wormhole Computing

Published: Thursday, October 3, 2002 | By: Dennis

The basic premise here is similar to what happened in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure. If you remember towards the end when Bill and Ted are in the jailhouse Ted says to himself "Remember a trashcan". Well after the history report they remembered that they needed to help their now, now past, selves and dropped a trashcan on the guard. It gets even more complicated with the keys but that’s another story.

Anyhow the theoretical physicist Todd Brun is thinking it would be pretty cool to use wormhole theories to send data back to computers from the future making computing tasks take no time at all.

Now if I remember correctly the theory of time travel is that you can travel from present time to the future and then back to present but you cannot travel back in time unless the "past" initiates the request, so I'm guessing that the computer will travel though time solving problems and come back to the present with the answers?? tongue smile

  • AMD Stock Price Falls

Published: Thursday, October 3, 2002 | By: Dennis

"Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) traded at $5 in light volume on Instinet, down from its Wednesday close at $5.37 after the company, the chief rival of Intel Corp. (INTC) in the market for microprocessors, warned of a "substantial operating loss" and sharply lower-than-expected revenue in the third quarter, citing a weak personal computer market. Intel slipped to $14.15 from its close of $14.30."

Or it could be the whole "hey we got a new chip but you can't have it yet." sort of thing.

  • Mitnick Sells Laptops

Published: Thursday, October 3, 2002 | By: Dennis

Kevin Mitnick has really become quite a celebrity in recent months. The ScreenSavers gang loves the guy even allowing him to host an episode of The ScreenSavers with Steve Wozniak in Sept.

On that show Kevin showed off the laptops that the FBI confiscated and mentioned that he has plans to sell them on ebay. Well the auction has started and as of this writing pulled in a $15,000 bid for each meeting their reserve price. With 3 days left how high do you think they will go?

    The nicer 486DX
The older and quite dirty 486SX25

Both of these laptops are signed by Steve and Kevin and feature FBI documentation proving their authenticity.
