  • New Radeon Preview @ Anandtech

Published: Tuesday, August 14, 2001 | By: Dennis

Anandtech takes a preview look at the new Radeon video cards from ATI. I am pretty impressed with the preview and really surprised with the benches, this pre-production video card is almost on par with the GeForce 3.

Though if memory serves the original Radeon was faster than the GeForce 2 of the time and not more than a few weeks later Nvidia answers back with the GeForce 2 Ultra and jumps back to the top again.

  • 2GHz Xeon Processors go to Hollywood

Remember all of them CGI movies?? Well they need to be rendered somehow.

I've always had a soft spot for computer animation and right now I'm getting the urge to dust off that copy of 3dsmax.

  • Kill Port 80

Published: Monday, August 13, 2001 | By: Dennis

With Code Red in full effect AT&T has opted to shutdown incoming web traffic to their residential cable modem customers. This won't effect web browsing but will hinder access to the web servers that aren't supposed to be there anyway. Though this sounds like a good idea and could reclaim some of the bandwidth that is being consumed by Code Red from the outside it won't stop further infection unless everyone running IIS patches their system.

Wirelles LAN Encryption is broken. Passive techniques have been used to definitively break the encryption scheme. Researchers are going as far as to say, treat your wireless networks as external!

A third varient of the ever popular Code Red worm has been found in Korea. This one sounds even worse than the first two. Maybe I need to start thinking about porting my ASP website to PHP.

  • ATI R200/R300 Roadmap Leaked

Published: Thursday, August 9, 2001 | By: Dennis

According to the roadmap the R200 or Radeon 2 is scheduled to ship in September along with a low-end version called the RV200. Not much has been said about the specs of these two chips except that the R200 will have 4 render pipelines and will support DirectX 8.1. The RV200 (not unlike your motor home) will only have 2 render pipes. It would seem that the RV200 part is based on the old Radeon core.

  • Kinda Slow on the News Front

The news was kind of slow yesterday so once again there was a day with no new news. I'll see what I can scrape up for today.

  • Fired for MP3s at Work

Published: Monday, August 6, 2001 | By: Dennis

IMHO, the crazy broad deserves it. 2000+ MP3s on your work machine? By my very unscientific calculations thats about 167 CDs worth of music. Hmm, somehow I don't think she converted them at work from her own collection. And somehow I don't think that roughly (again my calculations) 117 hours worth of MP3s were just for her personal use. Some Peer-to-Peer sharing going on there. Maybe the next NinjaLane poll should be on how many MP3s each of us has at work.
