"Nvidia has invested two years of research and nearly US$400 million to develop the NV30 chip after acquiring 3dfx. The NV30 is not only the product that Nvidia has devoted the most resources to in the company’s history, but will also be the product that sets the mainstream specification in the next two years."

  • Comdex 2002 Day 2 Posted

Published: Thursday, November 21, 2002 | By: Dennis

After much delay day two of our trip to Comdex 2002 has been posted. Overall day two wasn't much different than day one, we once again visited with quite a few vendors and also discovered that two days at Comdex just isn't enough.

  • Comdex Day 2 Report @ Anandtech

Published: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

    Basically these are the highlights.

    - Intel Prescott @ 3.20GHz
    - New Pentium 4 FSB - 200MHz x 4 = 800MHz!! (posted yesterday)
    - AMD "Barton" FSB @ 400MHz
    - Dual Channel DDR KT400A
    - Athlon 64 release target speed of 2.0GHz (currently at 1.4GHz)

I was really quite surprised as to how the larger companies handled their public relations at Comdex this year. Intel didn't have a booth at all, All we found was a single meeting room located away from anything of interest at Comdex. Once we got there the lady at the front desk said "no admittance without a meeting reservation." sad smile Likewise most of the AMD information was released in the keynote speeches and nobody at the booth had a clue what was going on, at least while I was there.

  • GeForce FX Pictures @ [H]ard|OCP

Published: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

At around 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon a sudden realization hit us while at Comdex. We didn't have enough time to see the GeForce FX in action!! nVidia decided to hold their own show at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, since the Hotel was quite a ways from the Convention Center Comdex attendees needed to ride the bus to and from the Bellagio. Considering we had a plane to catch and many other things to do in between the nVidia tour had to be canceled, angry smile grrr.

Anyhow Kyle was nice enough to post pictures of the GeForce FX, just jump to the last page of their preview to see them.

The NV30 or GeForce FX is a long ways off and in many ways by the time it is released ATI could have so much control of the market nVidia will be left holding their ...... (you get the idea). Anyhow I really liked this guys cartoon toward the bottom. big grin smile

  • 64-bit Unreal Tournament AMD Style

Published: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

Man you leave the show and all the good stuff happens. The Inquirer is reporting that AMD is showing off a 64-bit version of Unread Tournament 2003 running on a Athlon 64 at Comdex.
" As AMD says, the Unreal Engine is used for other award winning games, and Mark Rein, VP at Epic Games, said it will ship a 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament when the Athlon 64 chip "show up on retail shelves"."
I did see a couple of Athlon 64 motherboards while at Comdex but no sign of the actual chip.

  • ClawHammer Gets a Name

Published: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

This was announced at a keynote speech by AMD president and CEO Hector Ruiz.
"“AMD Athlon 64” will be the new product name for the company’s upcoming desktop and notebook-use processors based on the K8 core, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced on November 19. The two product lines were previously code-named “Clawhammer.”"
I wasn't able to attend any of the keynote speeches while I was at Comdex so I needed to read about it instead. sad smile

  • Comdex Day 2 & Site Issues

Published: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

Hello everyone, I just got back home from Comdex (short trip I know) and I'm a little jet lagged and need some sleep. I would like to say that Comdex day 2 wasn't as exciting as day 1 (more on that later). sad smile The pictures and writeup should be posted sometime during the course of the day tomorrow.

Until then have a good night.
